Reynard (or Reynie, as he prefers to be called) Muldoon is not your average eleven-year-old boy. First of all, he lives in an orphanage where he is constantly teased by all the other children. Then there's the fact that he's a genius. He's so smart that he needs his own tutor, Ms. Perumal, who is really more of a friend to him. It's because of Ms. Perumal that Reynie happened to be reading the newspaper that held a one-of-a-kind advertisement. "Are You a Gifted Child Looking for Special Opportunities?" Not only does this advertisement catch Reynie's eye, but that of many young children. All of these children enroll to take several tests consisting of many brain teasers. Out of all the children, though, only four succeed, with Reynie being one of the four. The children are all immediately drawn to each other. Not just because of their exceptional mental abilities, but also because they are all alone. Reynie, Kate, and Constance are all orphans, and Sticky has run away from a miserable home life. When they all finish with their tests they are led to a mysterious old house where they are introduced to Mr. Benedict. Mr. Benedict is an intriguing and incredibly smart man who has a secret mission for the children that only they can complete. To fulfill their mission, the children must go undercover at the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened. The headmaster of the school, Mr. Curtain, is up to no good, and it is up to the children to figure out what he is up to and hopefully stop him. It will be no easy feat, as the children will have to wrap their minds around puzzle after puzzle and face challenges that not even their wildest dreams could have ever created. With no choice but to turn to each other, the children embark on a journey that will forever change their lives.I have heard nothing but good things about this book. Needless to say, I had high expectations for it. Overall, I really enjoyed THE MYSTERIOUS BENEDICT SOCIETY, except I found that at times it was a bit lacking. First, I want to say that the author's writing style was marvelous. It definitely had the magic feeling that Roald Dahl put into his books that made them so wonderful. There was that extra umph to the book that made it quite enjoyable. Returning again to my reference of Roald Dahl, I felt like the adventure these kids went on was much like the adventure Charlie from CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY went on, without the candy! While the book is directed at a more middle grade audience, I still found myself enjoying the adventure and solving the riddles along with the children. Overall, I enjoyed the story and think it would be a great book for both reluctant readers and middle graders.Reviewed by: Tasha

Excellent book!! My boys and I read a lot of books together. I'm spoiled by now and only gravitate toward well-written, intelligent and interesting pre-teen novels. This one is very interesting, creative and exciting. It has 2 brave, brilliant boys and 2 tough, resourceful girls who overcome complex social and governmental obstacles as they combine teamwork, bravery, and investigative adventure to fight for what is right and sane for all. We loved this series!!! Our other favorite book series are An accidental adventure by C Alexander London and the misadventures of Edgar and Allan Poe by Gordon McAlpine. Happy Reading!

Guys (I'm from Jersey and when we say "guys," we mean "everyone," :), I'm so surprised that I didn't love this book. I haven't been this wrong about a book in a long time. I mean, it has a fun title, a whimsical cover and illustrations, secret tunnels, a master villain, the word "mysterious" in the title, etc. What's not to love?Well...I liked a couple of the main characters, Reynie and Kate. Sticky and Constance were less fun, but still interesting. Four kids who are on their own for one reason or another, but are each resourceful and creative in different ways. They all pass a very unique test and end up as secret agents for the good guy--Mr. Benedict--who is trying to stop the bad guy, Mr. Curtain, from basically taking over the world. To accomplish this, the wise Mr. Benedict sends the four vulnerable children to the grim island school where Mr. Curtain lives, works, and attempts to brainwash the world. A majority of the book took place while the kids were trapped on the island.Guys, it was bleak. So bleak and depressing that I literally stopped reading the book 75% of the way through and put it down for about 2 years. Not only was it bleak on the island, but not a lot that was interesting happened, either. I finally came back to the book only because I hate to leave books unfinished and I wondered if the book found happiness in the end. Poor, sad book. Eventually, things worked themselves out, and you can tell that Stewart is actually a very talented writer who genuinely tried to insert humor into the book, but it just didn't work for me. The Series of Unfortunate Events books are depressing, yet still somehow funny, perhaps because they're more over-the-top than the Benedict Society books. This book was kind of like 1984 on an island, at a school, for young adults. Very dystopian and grim. My advice? Read The Clockwork Sparrow instead, an utterly delightful and actually mysterious YA lit book that I've also just finished recently. One of the better ones I've read in awhile :).

The story about misfits struggling to save the world from dark forces might sound familiar, but the writing is fresh, witty and beautifully descriptive. Full of surprising twists and heartwarming moments, the book is a quick-paced adventure with charming characters, all set in a mysterious island with creepy kids and even creepier grownups. I loved that although the kids were the undisputed protagonists, the grownups were more than just "the bad guys" or "the parents". There were real conversations, actual collaboration and even a heroic moment or two.A fun adventure story for kids of all ages.

My son was assigned this book as summer reading rising to 6th grade. I try to either read books aloud with my kids, or read them simultaneously so we can talk together about what we've read. I should also reveal that I am a 4th grade teacher and embarrassed to say I had not yet read this, though it is in my classroom library and some of my more advanced readers have said that they love this book.I completed this book in two summer afternoons while stuck at home sick. And I didn't want to put it down. The characters are rich and the action is a fun romp through dangerous waters. It's really important to remember for whom this book was written -- instead of the knee-jerk adult analyses (too long, disappointing ending, blah blah blah) this book speaks beautifully well to 'tweens and their hopes and fears about fitting in, being "normal", being nerdy, the possibility of being a hero, etc. Do you REMEMBER what this stage of life felt like sometimes??! The author has masterfully spoken to the 9 - 12 year old reader: You are smart, you have unique talents and gifts, you CAN change the world, AND family are the folks who love and stick with you (blood relations or not).Is the book perfect? Nope. Is the book a great read? Yup. Is the book written for a 40+-year-old bibliophile teacher? Of course not, but I love the book and so does my son.I hope the author knows what an impressive job he did writing to his intended audience.

The Mysterious Benedict Society is a thrilling read for kids of all ages. It first starts out following one child named Reynie who sees an ad in the newspaper for "special opportunities". He takes tests for these "opportunities" and soon meets three other children named Sticky, Kate, and Constance. Soon, the four children meet Mr. Benedict, and his two assistants, Rhonda and Number Two. Mr. Benedict told the children that a man named Ledoroptha Curtain (the Sender) was transmitting messages into the public's mind and causing a problem known as the Emergency. The four children then go as undercover agents to a school Mr. Curtain had opened a few years earlier known as the Institute. Eventually the children team up against Mr. Curtain and the computer he created that was sending messages into everyone's minds and stop them from ruining the world. this was a very enjoyable book and I could not put it down.
